Shakshuka Recipe Instructions

Prepare the Sauce:

  • Heat olive oil in a large, deep skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onion and sliced bell pepper. Sauté until they begin to soften and turn golden (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Add minced garlic, ground cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, ground coriander, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes (if using), tomato paste, sugar (if using), and water. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  • Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened.

And the Eggs:

  • Create small wells in the sauce for the eggs. Crack an egg into each well. This will allow the eggs to poach in the sauce.
  • Cover the skillet and let it cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still slightly runny. Cook longer if you prefer firmer yolks.

Season and Serve:

  • Sprinkle some salt and pepper over the eggs to taste.
  • Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or cilantro.

Serve:

Serve shakshuka directly from the skillet, family-style, or plate individually. It’s excellent with warm, crusty bread, pita, or toast.

Enjoy your delicious homemade shakshuka!
