French Creme Brulee Recipe

Crème brûlée is a classic French dessert that is creamy, silky, and oh-so-delicious. It’s a perfect dessert to impress your guests or indulge in a sweet treat yourself. This French crème brûlée recipe is simple and made with just 4 basic ingredients: cream, eggs, sugar and vanilla. It makes 6 servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 5 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 6 tbsp granulated sugar for caramelizing

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.

  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.

  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Slowly pour the hot cream into the egg mixture, whisking constantly, until the mixture is smooth.

  5. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  6. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large measuring cup with a spout.

  7. Place 6 (4-ounce) ramekins in a large baking dish.

  8. Pour the custard mixture evenly into the ramekins, filling each one about 3/4 full.

  9. Place the baking dish in the oven and carefully pour hot water into the baking dish until it comes about halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

  10. Bake the crème brûlée for 35-40 minutes, or until the edges are set and the center is slightly jiggly.

  11. Remove the ramekins from the baking dish and let them cool to room temperature.

  12. Cover the ramekins with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days.

  13. When ready to serve, sprinkle a tablespoon of granulated sugar evenly over the top of each crème brûlée.

  14. Use a kitchen torch to caramelize the sugar until it’s melted and golden brown.

  15. Let the crème brûlées cool for a few minutes before serving.
